![]() A new state redistricting map and increasingly polarized politics helped Democrats take control of the state’s House and Senate this year - controlling both chambers for the first time since 1983. That changed Thursday, April 13, after Whitmer signed into law several measures that further regulate the state’s gun control laws. In 2019, bills were introduced in the Republican-controlled Michigan House and Senate with similar language, but the measures stalled in committee. They enable law enforcement or family members to petition a judge to issue an extreme risk protection order against someone who may present a danger to themselves or others, removing their firearms. Typically speaking, a 2A sanctuary is a jurisdiction that's adopted a resolution declaring gun control laws passed by a higher legislative body, such as the federal government or a state legislature, violate the constitution and won't be enforced in that jurisdiction.Īn effort to declare Michigan counties as 2A sanctuaries began late in 2019 -a response to laws, sometimes referred to as “red flag” laws, adopted in 17 states and the District of Columbia. What are 2A sanctuaries? And what does the new legislation mean for residents living in them? Defining a sanctuary Gretchen Whitmer’s signature on new gun-control legislation. … But these are all things we’ve handled working together.OTTAWA COUNTY - An ultraconservative group last week appeared poised to make Ottawa County the latest Michigan region to become a so-called Second Amendment "sanctuary.” Now, the ink has barely dried on Gov. “We’ve had residents that have called and complained about people showing up on their private property and putting their tents out. We’ve had citizens that have complained about beachgoers coming up on their property, taking their picnic tables off their property, bringing them out into the water, and using them as their personal picnic table,” Platzer said. But this just gives presence in the park and gives them the opportunity to do other things that need to be done in the city."Ĭouncil members asked if guards and law enforcement are responding to many residents’ complaints as a result of the crowds at the beaches at Lakeside and Lighthouse. Like if we have traffic issues or need them, they’re always right there. Winzer said the cost of security is “a little bit less” than overtime, as well, though she added, “The officers have always been there for us. And to put the officers up there, they’re getting the burnout.” ![]() And we’re ordering the officers to work the overtime. We only get so many good weekends in the summertime here in Michigan. “They work two weekends out of the month already. “Our parking is a hassle up in the north end of the city by Lighthouse and Lakeside Park, and when Nancy talked about this last year, our officers are to the point where they don’t want the overtime anymore. If you go by the beach on any given Saturday or Sunday, the numbers are extremely up there,” Platzer said Monday night. “So, the last several years, the beach numbers have increased dramatically. Port Huron Police Chief Joe Platzer said the guards are not armed and have traditionally been former police and military personnel.īoth he and Winzer said the use of security has helped alleviate city officers from overtime covering the two beaches on weekends and holidays.Īs is, cadets are at the parks every weekend, while two officers are present on holiday weekends - as they’ll continue to be during Memorial Day, July 4, and Labor Day. “Or if Chief’s saying, ‘We’re having more people than normal, we’re having more issues,’ maybe we need to add another guard.” That’s why we only do the per hour,” she said. “So, I don’t have an exact number because it’s weather dependent.” If it’s raining or there’s not a lot of people, we send them home,” Winzer told council members during the meeting. “The reason there’s not a dollar amount is we’re very careful. The cost of security, officials said, can be offset by park revenue within the city’s general fund.
